Lyrics

Got something to tell you babe, I’ll tell you straight

I went to work today, found out today was my last day

I can’t believe it happened…

Let me tell you exactly how it happened

Had lunch with the big guy and the big guy said,

We got to cut something….we got to cut something…

My head grew heavy and my hands got hot

Next thing I know I’m out here in the parking lot

And I’m talking to you on the telephone, babe

And you’re telling me to come on home

You work your whole life tryin’ to build up something

Then along comes a stiff wind and knocks it down to nothing

I didn’t lose my job, my job was taken from me

There’s a difference, you know what I mean

I didn’t lose my job, my job lost me.

They tried to tell me, Just watch your back they said

I said, How am I supposed to watch my back and still see where I’m going?

Hey Buddy, just don’t say we didn’t warn you

Be tough for a while but I think we can make it

We got the love, the kind to take us

To the other side of the difficult water

Take us to the other side

‘Cause when you look at me that way and you call my name

I know nothing’s gonna stand in our way

I didn’t lose my job, my job was taken from me

There’s a difference, what’s the difference, I’m a free man

I didn’t lose my job, my job lost me

So long, goodbye, good luck, see you later...

John Dodge and Members of the Oregon Symphony
John Dodge

Story

My friend Robert McBride is an on-air host at Portland's classical radio station, and he arranged this piece for string quartet based on my original acoustic guitar arrangement. Then we brought in members of the Oregon Symphony, including Nancy Ives on cello, to record.

Story

"Toro Toro" was based on my original piece, which became "Retorno del Toro" on the "TRIO" record. I rewrote the themes after a trip to Spain, which you can certainly hear toward the end of the piece. My favorite aspect of this recording is the Japanese Taiko drum, which was so large we couldn't get it through the studio door and instead had to record it on location!

Lyrics

Monkey in the middle stretched both ways

Squeezed just a little

That’s when the madness begins, obsession

Man’s got to have it, can’t let go, sweet little habit

That’s when the madness begins, obsession

No time said the sparrow, to deviate the straight and narrow

Got a job I gotta do, can’t stop, can’t stop and talk with you

No time said the sparrow

Children of darkness hear my plea,

Please put the hammer down

That’s when the madness begins

That’s when the madness begins

John Dodge and 3 Leg Torso

Story

3 Leg Torso has always been my favorite Portland band. They're unique, energetic, supremely talented and side-splitting funny. Courtney von Drehle plays accordion, Bela Balogh plays violin and Gary Irvine plays drums on this track.

Story

I wanted to write a theme that evoked the Civil War era, imagining a soldier far away from home who is dreaming of the girl he left behind.
